A smiley is most commonly used to convey an emotion in text communications for chat programs and on the World Wide Web for bulletin boards. They help convey a real life voice change or facial expression which are difficult to perform in text messages. A message conceived as rude or insulting in text can be transformed into a joke with a happy smiley logo. They are therefore very useful to help people not misinterpret the intent of a text message.
