PCI stands for "Peripheral Component Interconnect" and is a local bus standard developed by Intel. A good majority of motherboards developed include PCI expansion slots so peripheral devices such as modems, sound cards and video cards can be installed. With the advent of technologies such as AGP, PCI expansion slots are becoming less popular but are still an integrated part of most computer systems.
