An operating system performs tasks such as accepting and understanding input from keyboards and mice, displaying output on screens, organizing files on your hard drive and much more. As operating systems keep advancing the amount of tasks they perform keeps increasing, for example look at the difference between windows 3.1 and XP. Some of the most popular operating systems at the moment are Windows XP which is a commercial package and Linux which is free.
