According to Google their mission statement is a "mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

A Little History

Google has become the world's most popular search engine, it currently indexes the largest number of web pages (over 8 billion). They first opened their offices in California in September 7, 1998. Their first beta search was launched in 1998. Google search results have been used on a range of other web portals such as Yahoo, Looksmart, Aol and BBC. Many people feel the name Google was developed from a dialog in "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. However the Google website says it came from a play on the word "Googol", which was coined by Milton Sirotta. The word "Googol" refers to the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. Google have recently floated on the US stock market (2004), and profits are soaring in 2005.

The Search Technology

Google states that it uses a fair amount of open source software inhouse. The main search service currently (01/11/05) runs on Linux with mySQL database software. The developers of the search code use the Python programming language.
