GNU is a project developed in the early 1980's that creates and distributes free software for Unix compatible systems. GNU software is free to download, modify and redistribute with the only requirement is that once someone has downloaded and modified GNU software that they don't restrict distribution. Because Linux is a free operating system a lot of GNU software is used on Linux, however the two are separate and GNU is developed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
