A file server is a computer application that provides file handling for multiple users on a LAN (local area network). The point of a file server is that it saves disk space because multiple users can share the same file instead of each having their own copy. It also makes it either to modify and administrate the file data. An example of a file server application is Sun Microsystems "Network File System".
