To boot a computer is the process of starting a computer and the operating system residing on it (to start a computer you need to press the power button on the front of the computer case). The term to "boot a computer" was coined from the term "bootstrap" and expression "pull oneself up by the bootstraps". Therefore the term "boot" makes sense because boot basically means to get started.
