An animated gif or "GIF89a format" is a gif that supports multiple frames. When these frames are run in sequence they work very much like a cartoon and give the impression of motion. The speed of the sequence and whether the sequence is run once or continually repeated can be altered. Software graphical packages like "Macromedia Fireworks" can create animated gifs.
