This is an interactive technology which allows users to communicate
using a two way transmission of video and audio. As the word suggests
it's been designed specifically for use at conferences and large
meetings. Various technologies have over the years been used to
achieve a videoconference, it first began by using a two way television
set connected by cables, then by radio signals, after this telephone
signals. The telephone signal transmission is the one typically
used today, it has however taken many decades for the video and
sound quality to come upto scratch. The cost of videoconferencing
has lowered considerably in the the late 1990's and into the new
century with the huge popularity of the Internet. It is therefore
a fast-growing segment of the online computer industry. Present
day mass online communication applications like MSN Messenger and
Skype offer a videoconferencing service via the use of webcams,
the quality maybe low but this is bound to improve. Some of the
common communication standards used by this technology are G.723.1,
G.726, G.729, G.7xx, H.323 and H.324.
