Twitter

Twitter is one of the most popular social networking sites currently (2010) operational. Twitter's service differs slightly from other social networking sites. It's service has also been likened to a blogging site. Therefore, you could categorise Twitter as both of the following,

  1. Social Network
  2. Micro Blog

Twitter was founded by three people, who are as follows,

  1. Biz Stone
  2. Evan Williams
  3. Jack Dorsey

Twitter has it's head quarters in San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, United States. San Bruno looks toward the San Francisco Bay. It is located close to Silicon Valley, whose base is Santa Clara Valley, which includes the city of San Jose, viewed as the capital of Silicon Valley.

Twitter works like any other social networking site, in that, a user signs up for a free account, and then they are assigned a page, such as 'http://twitter.com/user". A user can then post an unlimited amount of times. A post on Twitter is referred to as a 'tweet'.

The one restriction to a 'tweet' is it's character length. The length is one hundred and forty characters. A user's tweets can be set for public viewing, or, to be only accessed by a user's friends list. However, the default setting is for a user's tweets to be publicly accessed.

Alongside a user posting his own tweets, he/she can also signup to follow other user's tweets. The Twitter homepage also contains links to the most tweets of the day. Twitter has been acknowledged for it's simplicity and ease of use.
