The above term stands for "Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet".
So it's a combination of two widely accepted standards: PPP and
Ethernet. Overall it specifies how a host computer connects with
a broadband modem, whether it is a wireless router, cable or dsl
modem. PPPoE is popular due to it's ease of use, it requires virtually
no setup implementation by the end user and integration by Internet
Service Providers. ISP's love it because they still use their dialup
authentication system for their broadband service and can therefore
sell the same line for multiple purposes. PPPoE has been in use
for over 6 years now and is supported by most modern online applications,
the downside is that PPPoE uses around 5% of a standard bandwidth.
Security is increased for broadband users because they can choose
to shutdown their PPPoE software and this will close the connection
to the ISP. All that's required to use PPPoE is either an Ethernet
card, adapter or external dsl modem which connects to the USB port.
