Oracle is a corporation listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Oracle's primary business is as a developer of computer software,
and specifically database applications. Oracle is renowned
as one of the leading software houses, it's database products
are used worldwide, and are ported onto all the major operating
systems.
As with the majority of dominant software corporations, Orcale
is located in Silicon Valley, California, USA. The corporation
is managed by CEO Larry Ellison (as of 2011), and was co-founded
in 1977 by Ellison, Ed Oates and Bob Miner. Oracle's products
are primarily designed for and used in business environments.
Computing historians attribute Oracle's use of the C programming
language as a key element in the corporation's success. The
C programming language has been supported by the majority
of operating systems, and this allowed Oracle to easily port
and offer it's software applications to a greater number of
customers.
Alongside it's commercial database products, Oracle has also
released database systems under the GNU General Public License.
MySQL is one such system, which is freely distributed, and
has become a default database system for online purposes.
MySQL is often used by bulletin boards, such as phpBB, to
store data.
Oracle has aggressively expanded it's business since 1977,
and has purchased many of it's competitors, such as Sun Microsystems
in 2009.
