Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is a website which can be located at the following address,

Primarily it's role has been to store old copies of web site's, so people can access long deleted web pages and sites. The site has also expanded into offering free books and movies.

The Internet Archive is relatively old, in comparison to other mainstream websites. It was founded in 1996, by Brewster Kahle, and remains located in San Francisco, California.

The search facility which provides access to the Internet Archive's data files is called the Wayback Machine, which is sometimes shortened to WABAC.

The Internet Archive is a nonprofit organisation, which is officially recognised as a library in the US, and currently (2010) employs around about two hundred people.

Although the Internet Archive was founded in 1996, it took five years before it had archived enough content to publish online, and for it to develop the Wayback Machine.
